We were so excited when we found out a Surf Rider was coming to our neighborhood! Cool, casual restaurant with excellent seafood and a selection of non-seafood items. We dined here last night and our server was very chatty and personable. We had the calamari and she crab soup for appetizers..delicious! I had a salad with blackened tuna bites for my entree and it was so good! We've had the fried seafood platter another time we dined here and it too is delicious!

I have been a loyal customer of Surf Riders from when they first was on Newtown Roads. I have ate at all their locations so this one being closer to me is a win-win!! Since the location is new, the restaurant is newer in terms of table, seatings but the look-decor is still their signature look. If you know, then you know. Still great food and great service.

Today is the first day that that Surf Rider Kempsville was open, and it did not disappoint. There is no sign on the outside of the restaurant yet, which was kinda funny, cause we felt like we were going into a secret restaurant that nobody knows about. But they opened May 4th (may the 4th be with them), and I have watched as they have been renovating the restaurant. Some friends and I decided to check it out for supper, and once we walked in we were greeted and seated in a booth. The inside has a nice bar area, and then a regular seating area. There were a lot of guests there eating already, so I'd say it was pretty full on a Thursday evening. Our waitress (Onalise I'm not sure of the spelling, I just remember she said it starts with an O) was our server and she was just great! Really enjoyed her company and her humor! There is a laminated drink menu as well as a separate laminated food menu. My friend ordered a dirty martini and the rest of us ordered the 32oz crush bucket ($15). There are 4 flavors and we tried them all, blood orange, caribbean, texas grapefruit, and regular orange. They were all good but the blood orange was probably my favorite. The martini was nice and strong as it should be. After looking over the menu which is one page back and forth, we decided on calamari, a couple soft shell crab sandwiches, a seared tuna dinner, a crab cake sandwich, a burger with half a crab cake, and tots, fries, onions rings, and a baked potato. The calamari was fantastic! Light and crisp, and so tender, not a hint of chewiness. Served with a chunky marinara sauce it was a perfect starter and cannot wait to eat it again when I come back. The crab cake sandwich was served with pickle, tomato, and lettuce, and was just full of lump crab, and the crab cake burger was a nice medium rare burger with a half sized lump crab cake ball perched on top also served with lettuce, tomato, and pickle slices. The soft shell crab sandwich was served with lettuce, tomato, and lettuce as well, and I added Mayo and some of the marinara sauce to it and it was crispy, plump, full of crab, and delicious. The tuna was well done and she asked for it to be rare, so it was corrected and the flavor of it was really savory, and tender. Overall, we had such a great experience there for supper, and for it to only have been open for a few hours, they were doing great. The steamers weren't working yet, so no steamed food can be ordered yet, only broiled or fried food for now but I'm sure it will be up and working asap! I cannot wait to come back for delicious drinks and seafood!!!
